Una pin-up es una modelo cuyas fotografías figuran, principalmente, en las portadas de las revistas o en calendarios, etc. La expresión "pin-up" se popularizó en los EE. UU. en los años 1940, y, luego, se fue haciendo popular internacionalmente. Con este nombre se conocen las fotografías o dibujos de chicas bonitas en actitudes sugerentes o, incluso, nada más que con una sonrisa, o saludando, o mirando a la cámara fotográfica, etc. Su éxito fue tan rotundo que con el tiempo han llegado a influir en muchos terrenos, como el cine, la televisión, la publicidad, los cómics, etc.

Las pin-ups, en la actualidad (principios del siglo XXI), son generalmente modelos fotográficos, actrices de cine, cantantes, modelos de Alta Costura o Prêt-à-porter, etc. Es poco frecuente que una pin-up se dedique exclusivamente a ser pin-up.
El término pin-up puede referirse también a dibujos, acuarelas, cuadros u otros tipos de ilustraciones. El término empezó a ser de uso frecuente en inglés en 1941; sin embargo, el uso del término está documentado ya a finales del siglo XVIII. Las imágenes de pin-ups podían recortarse de revistas o periódicos o ser tarjetas postales o litografías. Las fotografías de pin-ups que aparecían en los calendarios estaban hechas para ponerlas en la pared, como un cartel.
Una de las pin-ups más populares fue Betty Grable. Sus fotos estaban en los armarios de muchos soldados durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Otras pin-ups eran dibujos, representando generalmente modelos de belleza ideal. Un temprano ejemplo fue Gibson girl, dibujada por Charles Dana Gibson. De las pin-up imaginarias, probablemente la más conocida sea Betty Boop, personaje creado por Max Fleischer.
Hasta los años 70, la mayoría de las pin-up fueron actrices cinematográficas. Pero a partir de esa década hubo también cantantes y modelos que fueron famosas como pin-up.
El término inglés ˝cheesecake˝ (literalmente "pastel de queso") es un sinónimo de pin-up. El uso más antiguo del término cheesecake con este significado está documentado en el año 1934, pero se popularizó unos 20 años más tarde, con la frase (refiriéndose a una mujer guapa) ˝better than a cheesecake˝ (mejor que un pastel de queso). Su equivalente masculino son los beefcake (pastel de carne).
En general, las imágenes de pin-up no fueron consideradas pornográficas, y, en la actualidad, (principios de siglo XXI), sólo son censuradas en algunos países, en su mayoría, integristas islámicos. En algunos países donde la mayoría de la población es musulmana, las fotografías de pin-up figuran en la última página de los periódicos, en lugar de en la primera, para que no estén a la vista de los transeuntes cuando están expuestos para su venta, por considerarlo más conforme con la moral, usos y costumbres locales.

The Project:
For the 2012 year, I've decided to take a blast from the past, and embrace the world of instant film! Armed with a Polaroid 210 Automatic Land Camera (for now), I plan on taking a "pack a week" of photos, and will be exploring the world with this new toy.
